'A
mal' a movie directed by Richie Mehta
received six nominations at the Genie
Awards held in Ottawa on April 4. The
Genie Awards are the Canadian equivalent
of the Oscars.
Of all the nominations, Dr. Shiva's rendition of Meer Taqi Meer's Ghazal Rahi
Nagufta won for ‘Original Song' in the
movie about an auto-rickshaw driver's brush
with a multi-millionaire. Shiva's song is
enacted on screen by Naseeruddin Shah.
‘Amal' is the story of a rickshaw driver in
India satisfied with his lot, who meets an old
bum on the streets and they have an
exchange. The bum turns out to be a millionaire and leaves Amal all his money. An
urban fable of sorts, the movie is about kindness, integrity, and judging what wealth and
success means to each person.
The story "was born in my brother's
head," Mehta told a television channel in
Dallas, TX during the American Film
Institute Festival in April last year.
Disguised as a vagabond, the millionaire
(Naseeruddin Shah) is searching the streets
for the last morsel of humanity, someone of
integrity he could leave his money to.
A Torontonian, Mehta collected the nominations for ‘Best Direction' and ‘Best
Adapted Screenplay' (with his brother), and
his team was also nominated for ‘Best
Motion Picture' (David Miller and Steven
Bray); ‘Best Actor' (Rupinder Nagra); ‘Best
Overall Sound' ( Sanjay Mehta, Stephan
Carrier, and Kirk Lynds).
But ‘Amal' was not the only one to get
nominated. Deepa Mehta was nominated
for ‘Best Original Screenplay' for her movie,
‘Heaven on Earth', depicting the life of a
woman having an arranged marriage and
coming to Canada leaving behind her loving
and supportive family to be in a hostile environment in a new country.
Bollywood's leading actress Preity Zinta
was among the nominees for ‘Best Actress'
for her lead role in the same movie.
