Venture Capitalist Killed in California Home Invasion

Venture capitalist Raveesh 'Ravi' Kumra was killed in his home in Monte Sereno, Calif., Nov 30, in what police describe as a home invasion. His ex-wife Harinder, who was reportedly injured, informed police that they were targeted by four burglars, according to local news reports.

The former winery owner was found dead on the second floor of his 7,000-square-foot luxury home, Patch.com reported. Kumra, who migrated to the United States from Kartharpur in Punjab in 1970, bought the Mountain Winery in Saratoga in 1995 for $6 million. The winery – which had been built by French-born California wine pioneer Paul Masson more than a century ago – was sold in 1999 after reported disagreements between Kumra and his workers, the report said.

Kumra made his fortune in the mobile phone industry and had lived in the mansion in the southern part of Silicon Valley since 1995, but had reportedly encountered financial difficulties in the recent past.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Los Gatos/Monte Sereno police have released a sketch of one of several assailants wanted in connection with the killing.

The assailant is described as a skinny Latino or white man, about 23 or 24 years old, about 6 feet tall, with black hair, dark eyes and a light complexion.

Police have declined to say how Kumra was killed, emphasizing that they wanted to protect the integrity of the investigation.

Police are also not disclosing whether the robbers took anything from the four-bedroom, seven-bath home that sits on 3 acres behind a brick wall, a mechanical gate and a circular driveway.

Investigators also said they did not know whether this was a random home invasion or a targeted assault.
