N.J.-based Group Seeks Student Volunteers for Summer Program in India

Uplift Humanity, an international non-profit organization dedicated to the rehabilitation of underprivileged juveniles in South Asia, is seeking Indian-American youth volunteers for their third annual rehabilitation program to be held in Gujarat, July 3 to 21.

Every year, the Basking Ridge, N.J.-based organization, runs a program in which Indian-American students travel to India to educate teenagers and kids residing in Bal Gokulum, a juvenile center in Vadodara, Gujarat. The children in Bal Gokulum have been either orphaned, neglected by parents, or committed crimes.

According to a press release, the group is looking for Indian-American high school students who are willing to volunteer three weeks of their time in the summer in order to help disadvantaged youths successfully assimilate back into their communities. The student volunteers will share their knowledge and skills in order to open up doors of opportunity for these disadvantaged youths.

During the 18-day visit, the volunteers will teach pre-arranged lessons based on a specialized 300-page life-skills curriculum that the organization has compiled on behalf of the Gujarat government.

The lessons include but are not limited to, ethical decision making, self-esteem development, public speaking, daily etiquette, communication with peers and basic English reading and writing, the release said.

Established in June 2010, the group aims to empower juveniles in South Asia through cross-cultural educational initiatives.

The group’s motto – “by teenagers … for teenagers” exemplifies the power, creativity, and uniqueness of education developed by youth, the release said.

Though started in a New Jersey town, the organization has rapidly spread throughout the United States, garnering volunteers and support from a variety of American cities, the release said.
