Ang Lee's adventure fantasy drama "Life of Pi" has received 11 nominations for the 2013 Academy Awards, while romantic comedy-drama "Silver Linings Playbook,” starring Anupam Kher, has received eight, it was announced Jan. 10. Steven Spielberg's presidential drama "Lincoln" is the front-runner for the 85th annual awards with 12 nominations.
Other nominations for best movie include musical "Les Miserables," Iran hostage drama "Argo," French language drama "Amour," Osama bin Laden thriller "Zero Dark Thirty," Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained," and mythological film "Beasts of the Southern Wild."
The Oscars are given out by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and this year's winners will be named at a ceremony in Hollywood on Feb.24.
"Life of Pi", a fantasy adventure drama, widely shot in India, is the adaptation of Canadian author Yann Martel's Man Booker Prize-winning eponymous novel. It narrates the journey of an Indian boy who survives a storm. Nominations for “Silver Linings Playbook” include best actor (Bradley Cooper); best actress (Jennifer Lawrence); supporting actor (Robert De Niro); supporting actress (Jacki Weaver); directing (David O. Russell); adapted screenplay and film editing.
Adapted from the novel of the same name by Matthew Quick, “Silver Linings Playbook” stars Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence, with Robert De Niro, Jacki Weaver, Kher as Dr. Cliff Patel, Julia Stiles and Chris Tucker in supporting roles. The film premiered at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival on Sept. 8 and has received critical acclaim.
The foreign language films nominated for the golden statuette include "Amour" (Austria), "Kon-Tiki" (Norway), "No" (Chile), "A Royal Affair" (Denmark) and "War Witch" (Canada).
Kathryn Bigelow's "Zero Dark Thirty" and Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained" too are in a tie with five nominations each to their credit.
Bond film "Skyfall" has four nods.
