Sixty-nine students of South Asian origin are among the 300 semifinalists in the 2013 Intel Science Talent Search. The finalists are to be announced on Jan. 23.
The highest number, 22, of South Asians are from New York state; California comes in next with 13 while Massachusetts has five. There is only one South Asian student from New Jersey.
The Intel Science Talent Search is the nation's most prestigious pre-college science competition. Contest participants have made extraordinary contributions to science and hold more than 100 of the world's most coveted science and math honors, including the Nobel Prize and National Medal of Science, according to the STS website announcing the semi-finalists.
The Intel contest recognizes 300 students and their schools as semifinalists each year; participants compete for $1.25 million in awards.
sFrom that select pool, 40 finalists are invited to Washington, D.C., in March to display their work to the public, meet with notable scientists and compete for the top award of $100,000.
