Desi Spotting at the Golden Globes

Fashion designers of South Asian origin were well represented at the Golden Globes and parties surrounding the Jan. 13 awards show at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif. Nicole Richie walked the red carpet in a blue Naeem Khan gown, accessorizing it with a fringe House of Harlow 1960 clutch; actress Odette Annable was spotted in a purple and yellow Rachel Roy dress at the InStyle Golden Globe Awards after-party; and French actress Marion Cotillard sported a Prabal Gurung pant ensemble at Dom Perignon and W Magazine’s celebration of the Golden Globes on Jan. 11.

Although Ang Lee’s “The Life of Pi,” did not win any big awards, the film’s protagonist Suraj Sharma was at the table with the director and was seen mingling with the who’s who of Hollywood. Sharma who seemed confident in a white shirt and formal black suit with a matching bow-tie, plays the lead in the film based on Canadian author Yann Martel’s award-winning eponymous novel about the journey of an Indian boy who survives a storm and is left on a lifeboat with a tiger.

Bollywood actress Tabu, who plays the character of Gita Patel, Pi’s mother, was also at the table, looking gorgeous in a sari. The actress, who was previously seen in Mira Nair’s “The Namesake,” wore a red Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla sari with a golden blouse. “Life of Pi” won a single trophy – best original score by Mychael Danna – but lost out in the best drama and best director categories.

Danna was nominated alongside Dario Marianelli (“Anna Karenina”), Alexandre Desplat (“Argo”), John Williams (“Lincoln”) and Tom Tykwer, Johnny Klimek and Reinhold Heil (“Cloud Atlas”). “Thank you to Fox for being crazy enough to make this movie,” Danna said in his acceptance speech, while acknowledging his wife, Aparna, for her support.

“Parks and Recreation” star and comedian Aziz Ansari made an appearance as a presenter being carried onstage by actor Jason Bateman. “Wow, the cast of ‘Downton Abbey’ have some great weed backstage!” Ansari said. Ansari and Bateman presented the award for Best Actress in a TV Series, Comedy or Musical, which was won by Lena Dunham for HBO’s “Girls.” According to news reports, right after Ansari joked on the red carpet that he was wearing “Kevin Dior,” a reference to Christian Dior’s cousin who works at Home Depot, the hashtag “@kevinHomeDepot” popped up.

Emmy-winner Archie Panjabi was nominated in the Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Miniseries or TV Movie for “The Good Wife,” but lost to Maggie Smith, who plays dowager Countess Violet Crawley on “Downton Abbey.” Panjabi was seen at the awards function is a white off-shoulder gown.

British actor Dev Patel, whose film “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” was nominated in the Best Motion Picture – Comedy category was also seen with a few of the cast members at the awards function. Nominated in the same category was David O. Russell’s “Silver Linings Playbook,” that features Anupam Kher. Patel also appears in HBO’s “The Newsroom” that was also nominated for Best Television Series – Drama, but lost to “Homeland.”

According to news reports, Patel and his girlfriend, actress Freida Pinto, walked the red carpet at the Fox Searchlight after-party following the awards show. Pinto was wearing an Antonio Berardi Spring 2013 dress with blue sequins, a Roger Vivier clutch and pumps, while Patel was in a Burberry suit. The couple was also spotted at the pre-Golden Globes party hosted by W Magazine, where Pinto was wearing a blue Missoni dress.
