Somdev Devvarman, the flag bearer for Indian men's tennis, kept his country's hopes alive at the Australian Open with a 6-3 6-2 6-3 opening round victory over Germany's Bjorn Phau on Monday. The 27-year-old from Assam served four aces and made just one unforced error in a Court 10 match against Phau that lasted an hour and 50 minutes.

  The Indian cricket team capped off the year with another loss, going down by six wickets to Pakistan in the first ODI between the two sides at the Chepauk here Sunday. India, put in to bat in trying conditions, managed 227 for six, largely thanks to a superlative unbeaten century from captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (113 not out).

Former England captain Tony Greig, one of the architects of cricket's World Series revolution in the 1970s, has died at the age of 66 after suffering a heart attack at his Sydney home on Saturday. Greig, who was diagnosed with lung cancer in October, was taken to a Sydney hospital but died at about 1:45 pm (0245 GMT).
