Kundra reinstated, White House nixes old infraction
Vivek Kundra, 34, appointed on March 5 as President Obama's Chief Information Officer appears beset with a succession of problems arising from his past. But he returned to work after a five day absence triggered by an FBI probe into alleged procurement deals by former and current employees in his previous office of Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Washington, D.C.
The FBI has made clear Kundra is not under investigation. But the White House and Kundra decided he should go on leave to preclude any appearance of impropriety.
A week after he took office as Obama's CTO, Kundra suddenly went on leave March 12, when the FBI raided his old office and arrested two people. Yusuf Acar, 40, acting chief security officer in Kundra's previous CTO office in D.C., and Sushil Bansal, a former employee and now President of Advanced Integrated Corporation were charged with bribery of a public official, money laundering, wire fraud and conflict of interest. That investigation is ongoing. But Kundra was allowed back into office March 17, after just five days.
