Census Bureau will try an ad campaign to reach minorities
More than half those funds will go for advertising across traditional and social media, and nearly a quarter will be devoted exclusively to Asian, black and Hispanic outlets.
"A year from now, the populace will have seen and heard more ads in national and local media than in any prior census," the Census Bureau's acting director, Thomas L. Mesenbourg, told a House Oversight and Government Reform subcommittee.
The agency will also hire 2,000 temporary employees by the end of June to coordinate efforts with more than 10,000 local organizations and corporations to help encourage greater participation.

Police in Uttar Pradesh are investigating Gandhi in a row that could embarrass his Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), already suffering from internal squabbles over campaign strategy just weeks before a general election.
Gandhi, who is also the nephew of Congress party chief, Sonia Gandhi, said footage of him at a rally had been doctored but he would not say by whom.
Local media played clips in which he is alleged to have said he would cut off the hands of Muslims who threatened Hindus and compared a rival Muslim candidate to Osama bin Laden.

Biryani seller, others can sell street food in Toronto starting in May
Chef Suman Roy, former Chairman of the Chef's Association of Toronto, and currently, Executive Chef, Sodexo Canada, a food service and facilities management company, told News India-Times it was worth the trouble and the expense for the vendors.
Among the eight who qualified were Azim Lila, who will be selling Chapli Kabab and samosas, but with more of an Afghan flair and Seemab Ahmad will sell Biryani served with "salsa curry" says Chef Suman.
"The demand for this biryani is huge," said the Kolkata born Roy who was a judge in his capacity as a Member of the Toronto Food Policy Council. "Depending on the menu, for example, from a chef's perspective, the gentleman selling biryani, can recuperate costs very easily in less than a year. I thought I should get one too," he added. "But the only catch to it, and which I absolutely love, is that at least 70 percent of the time, the owner has to be with the cart."

Kundra reinstated, White House nixes old infraction
The FBI has made clear Kundra is not under investigation. But the White House and Kundra decided he should go on leave to preclude any appearance of impropriety.
A week after he took office as Obama's CTO, Kundra suddenly went on leave March 12, when the FBI raided his old office and arrested two people. Yusuf Acar, 40, acting chief security officer in Kundra's previous CTO office in D.C., and Sushil Bansal, a former employee and now President of Advanced Integrated Corporation were charged with bribery of a public official, money laundering, wire fraud and conflict of interest. That investigation is ongoing. But Kundra was allowed back into office March 17, after just five days.

Jayalalithaa fasts for Tamil refugees trapped in Sri Lanka
Jayalalithaa, who heads the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), also began a drive to raise funds for rehabilitation of Sri Lankan war refugees, saying the conflict was a "genocide" against the Tamils there.
Indian politicians face pressure to protect Sri Lankan Tamils, who are closely linked to about 60 million Tamils in Tamil Nadu across a narrow strait from Sri Lanka. The issue is all the more sensitive ahead of general elections in April-May.

After ‘Top 13' twist, Anoop Desai remains to sing another day
It's not the first time that the ‘Idol' stage has seen an Indian American perform. ‘Season 6' introduced the world to Sanjaya Malakar, who in spite of bad comments from judges and his funky hairdos, went on to enter the ‘Top 7'.
In a surprising ‘Wild Card' episode on March 6, it was revealed that Desai, along with Jasmine Murray of Starkville, MS; Megan Joy Corkrey of Sandy, UT; and Matt Giraud of Kalamazoo, MI, were chosen by the ‘American Idol' judges to advance in the competition and join Kris Allen, Danny Gokey, Alexis Grace, Allison Iraheta, Adam Lambert, Scott MacIntyre, Jorge Nunez, Lil Rounds and Michael Sarver in the Top 13.
This is the first time in the history of ‘American Idol' that 13 finalists have been chosen to compete for the coveted title.

How a move to protect American workers could instead cost United States jobs
The economic stimulus package signed into law last week by President Obama contains a provision antithetical to innovation and domestic prosperity. That provision makes it even harder - some say impossible - for companies that receive government bailout money to hire foreign employees for specialized work.
The chief sponsors of the initiative, Sen.Charles E. Grassley (R-Iowa) and Bernard Sanders (I-Vt.), say that they are concerned about the plight of laid-off Americans. And they are rightly critical of companies that abuse the H1-B visa - meant for highly skilled foreign workers in specialized fields - to hire low-skilled workers who accept a fraction of the pay com manded by Americans.

‘Slumdog' and ‘Jai Ho!' are named top Hollywood words
‘Jai Ho!', Hindi for ‘Let There be Victory' and the title of the movie's Oscar-winning best song, and ‘Slumdog' -- the controversial term coined by the filmmakers for young slum-dwellers in Mumbai -- were named the top ‘HollyWords' of the year that closed with the Oscars.
The Global Language Monitor, which uses an algorithm to track the frequency of words and phrases in the world's print and electronic media, said it was rare for two words from the same movie to be ranked in its annual list.
‘Slumdog Millionaire' crowned its awards sweep by winning eight Oscars, also including best picture and director.

Wrestlers preparing for Commonwealth Games ask for more food
Some of the wrestlers have complained that although the government has earmarked huge amounts of money for the New Delhi games, enough was not trickling down for the preparation of athletes.
"We are not getting (a) proper diet... how can you expect us to deliver good results," an unnamed wrestler told the Hindustan Times newspaper.
"They are giving us double-toned milk and vegetables prepared in refined oil. We are not getting anything special to supplement our diet," he added.

MIT research team gives Indian police an image makeover
Hazari Lal, a shy, mustached officer, has been posted to 13 stations in 13 years. And like other Indian police officers, he is on call 24/7, with no weekly day off, he said. "The police work without any rest. It makes us irritable all the time. And we take it out on the people who come to us for help," Lal, a station house officer in Shahjahanpur, about 80 miles southwest of New Delhi, said, as he took off his khaki-colored beret and placed his two cellphones inside it. "We always carry an unknown fear called ‘transfer' in our hearts because we can be posted out to a faraway station anytime."

Jindal's catchphrase played on Obama's ‘Yes, we can' slogan
Americans can do anything
"Good evening. I'm Bobby Jindal, Governor of Louisiana.Tonight, we witnessed a great moment in the history of our Republic. In the very chamber where Congress once voted to abolish slavery, our first African-American President stepped forward to address the state of our union. With his speech tonight, the President completed a redemptive journey that took our nation from Independence Hall . to Gettysburg . to the lunch counter . and now, finally, the Oval Office.
Regardless of party, all Americans are moved by the President's personal story -- the son of an American mother and a Kenyan father, who grew up to become leader of the free world.
