Harvard graduates hit it off with peer-to-peer loans for students

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
A t a time when cash is tight and student loan sources are shrinking, three Harvard University graduates have come up with an innovative solution: A peer-to-peer lending Web site called UniThrive.

The brainchild of Tarun Parikh, Nimay Mehta and Joshua Kushner, the site was launched in May to help out students in need of financial aid.

At the moment, loans are limited to Harvard students, but plans are under way to expand to other institutions in the fall semester.

"The Obama administration is seeking to remove private banks from the federal education lending systems," Parikh notes in a blog entry on UniThrive.org.

Pakistan court orders Musharraf to explain emergency rule

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
Pakistan's Supreme Court ordered former president Pervez Musharraf on Wednesday to answer questions next week about his decisions to oust the judiciary and impose emergency rule in 2007.

The order, issued by a 14member bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry, instructs Musharraf to either show up in court himself on July 29 or have an attorney do so on his behalf.

Compliance is not mandatory but failure to show up will mean Musharraf will have no further chances to defend himself in a case that is aimed at determining whether it was constitutional for him to oust the judiciary and impose emergency rule in November 2007.

Asia darkens under longest solar eclipse of century

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
China total solar eclipse on July 22 swept across a narrow swathe of Asia, where hundreds of millions of people watched the skies darken, though in some places thick summer clouds blocked the sun.

The longest total solar eclipse of the 21st century cut through the world's most populous nations, India and China, as it travelled half the globe. It was visible along a roughly 250 km wide (155 miles) corridor, U.S space agency NASA said.

In India, where eclipse superstitions are rife, people snaked through the narrow lanes of the ancient Hindu holy city of Varanasi and gathered for a dip in the Ganges, an act believed to bring release from the cycle of life and death.

Serenading subcontinent

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
Her name recognition and popularity might rival even that of President Barack Obama. Her admiration and affection for India may be a given. Her determination to take U.S.-India relations to new heights, or what is being referred to as "Version 3.0," may be unquestionable. But has she accomplished what she set out to in her first visit to India as secretary of state? The jury is still out.

During her three-day visit, Hillary Rodham Clinton held parleys with senior Cabinet members, met with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, had photo-ops with a number of political leaders, including Congress Party President Sonia Gandhi, her parliamentarian son Rahul Gandhi and Bharatiya Janata Party leader L.K. Advani. She interacted with corporate leaders, members of the civil society and even a Bollywood matinee idol. In a gesture rich in symbolism, she stayed at the Mumbai Taj Mahal Hotel, the scene of the terrorist attack last November.

Clinton pitched the expanding India-U.S. relations on to even higher ground than the previous administration. "I can pledge more than what President (Bill) Clinton and (George) Bush did.

Congress strike shuts down West Bengal

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
Supporters of Congress and the Communist Party of India (Marxist), India's biggest left party, have a long history of post-poll violence though they were allies in the federal government until last year.

The 12-hour strike paralyzed railway services and forced airlines to cancel or reschedule flights, police said.

After torching several buses on July 16, Congress party supporters squatted on railway lines and blocked major roads on July 17.

"No vehicle is plying in the state but we have (had) no major untoward incident on Friday," Raj Kanojia, a senior police official, told Reuters.

Clinton has a hard task to make visit to india a success

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
For a Secretary of State to President Barrack Obama, who has captured the imagination of India, a person, who is well known and liked in India, the first chair of the India "Caucus" in the Senate, a presidential candidate, who received massive support from the Indian Americans, Hillary Clinton is arriving in India a little too late.

She has been in office for nearly six months and she has already visited some other countries in Asia and some of her pronouncements in China have caused concern in India. There are other reasons for her to reassure India that the strategic partnership between the two countries is intact. She, therefore, has a hard task ahead of her to make the visit a success.

Of course, the Obama Administration had to wait till the elections in India. Like everyone else, the US might also have expected change in India.

"Cricket is like a religion in the country. Every second person plays cricket no matter what. If any boy is born, he is going to pick up a cricket bat," she added

But Mirza, 22, took up tennis instead and is thrilled to be playing again after eight months off last year with a wrist injury even if she is still some way from her highest ranking.
