At a press briefing following his meeting with the secretary, Chidambaram said he had discussed stepped-up infiltration of terrorist elements from Pakistan over the last few months. "The numbers are now running at about 50 to 60 (infiltrators) a month.

Myanmar, Afghan woman journalists to get courage awards

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
The International Women in Media Foundation (IWMF) is giving its 2008 Courage in Journalism Award to Burmese journalist Aye Aye Win, and Afghan journalist Farida Nekzad.

The awards were scheduled to be present ed at a gala luncheon at the Waldorf Astoria in New York October 21. Every year, IWMF gives out three such awards. 56 women journalists have received Courage Awards since the IWMF launched the program in 1990. Sponsored by media outlets and other corporate sponsors, the awards ceremony is usually attended by some 700 people. Last year actress and humanitarian Angelina Jolie was one of the presenters, and this year Mayor Michael Bloomberg is among several presenters of the award.

Aye Aye Win, 54, a correspondent for the Associated Press in Myanmar, is one of the only women journalists in her country, says IWMF, and her movements are closely monitored by the military junta ruling that country. "She has been called "the axe-handle of the foreign press" by other media in Myanmar because she has helped foreign journalists to report on the country. Win's courage has put her high on the "watch list" of the authorities.

Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's needs, but not every man's greed

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

This is the 60th anniversary of the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi and the 40th of that of Martin Luther King.. But their spirit was visiting New York last week in many forms, strong enough to give us, puny individuals, heart.

(A list of the Gandhi-Satyagraha-King linked events appears on the below.)

In the face of global warming, a shrinking polar ice-cap and a widening ozone hole over the South Pole, the individual human may feel as lost as the polar bear looking for a way out of a maze ice floes in the disturbing yet beautiful photo by Subhankar Bannerjee.

In ‘The Way We Live Now' section of the New York Times Magazine last Sunday (April 20), Michael Pollan poses the question which we all must have asked ourselves: "Why Bother?"

There is no question that the direction of ‘civilization' is taking is towards changing this once green planet (really more blue than green, as three-fourths of it is ocean) into one-fourth yellow desert and three-quarters fishless sea, enveloped in gray smog.

Mumbai tops global rentals - joins New York and Tokyo

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

Nearly 40 million square feet of office space was added in India last year, with the Bandra-Kurla Complex in Mumbai commanding the highest rentals even as the metro joined New York and Tokyo as the most expensive realty markets in the world, says a new study.

"The year 2007 will be remembered for the increased interest in understanding the Tier II and Tier III markets of India," said Anshuman Magazine, chief of South Asia for the Los Angeles-based realty consultancy CB Richard Ellis.

"Occupiers have been looking closely at these non-metro markets that offer lower costs and possibly improved employee retention, compared to the mature markets," Magazine said, while releasing the story on India's real estate industry.

"Such was the frenzy to release supply to a 'hot' market that some micro-markets like the IT corridors in Chennai saw its office supply in 2007 multiply some six times from the new supply in 2006."

The study said thanks to the addition of 39 million square ft in new office space in 2007, the overall commercial office stock in the country increased to 53 million square feet, taking the total stock to 190 million square feet.

The developers ramped up their supplies mas sively because of spiraling rentals that also lured private equity funds into the realty industry, said the study by the consultancy that has some 300 offices worldwide.

"The rental trend has continuously risen this year, with significant rental escalations in markets like Gurgaon in the National Capital Territory and Outer Ring Road in Bangalore," it said.

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
Fiction abounds with tales of hidden treasures rediscovered after centuries, or of a little shop boy being discovered to be a great genius, but reality outdid fiction this season in the art world.

The highlights of the season are in Times Square style headlines Buddha in neglected attic sets world record for Asian art; child from a carpet trading family in Kolkata is recognized as the new star of the Indian art firmament, out pricing M.F. Husain or Tyeb Mehta; and 46 New York art institutions and galleries club together to launch Asian Contemporary Art Week in New York March 1524.

In a sale at Christie's New York on March 18 a wooden statue of the supreme Buddha, scarcely two feet high, which had disappeared from a Japanese temple in 1915 when Shinto replaced Buddhism as Japan's official religion, made a history making comeback.

The wood sculpture of Dainichi Nyorai, the supreme Buddha, attributed to the sculptor Unkei achieved $14,377,000, exceeding by almost 10 times its pre sale estimate of $1,500,000-2,500,000. It set new world auction records including record for Japanese art, and any Asian work of art sold in New York.
