2 Indian Americans among team winners at science competition
Shah and his partner and Yekaterina Shpanskaya of Math and Science School (Home School) in Raleigh, North Carolina won first place in the team competition. Their computer science project findings facilitate the understanding of fusion, by analyzing computer-simulated fusion reactor data, and pave the way for an efficient analysis of massive amounts of data on powerful computer architectures, consisting of hundreds or thousands of processors operating in parallel, the Siemens Foundation website said.

Kavya casts a spell
Shivashankar was among 11 finalists at the contest that started out with 293 spellers – the largest number in its history. The tension was palpable at the Grand Hyatt in Washington, D.C., May 28 when only three contestants remained: Shivashankar, Aishwayra Pastapur of Springfield, Ill., and Tim Ruiter from Reston, Va.
Pastapur, the first of the three to be knocked out, misspelled "menhir" and departed teary eyed. She will receive $7,500 in prize money. Ruiter misspelled "maecenas," but remained calm.

11th Annual Asian American Literary Awards
The event is scheduled to be held from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Film Center at New York University, 36 East 8th Street, New York. A VIP reception will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Deutsches Haus at NYU, 2 Washington Mews, New York.
Hamid receives the fiction award for "The Reluctant Fundamentalist" (Harcourt), the story of Changez, a Pakistani who goes to America to get a good education and make money, and ends in violence.

United Arab Emirates based Indian-owned firm among top nanotech awardees
Gold Valley Chemical Company (GVCC), based in the emirate of Ajman in the UAE, figures among the 50 winners of the 2008 Nano 50 awards announced this month by Nanotech Briefs, the digital publication forum of NASA.
GVCC has been selected for developing a product that incorporates nano technology in its design and operation, "with significant current or near-term commercial applications".
According to GVCC president Adolph Dias, the product that his company has developed White gold - significantly enhances the quality of titanium dioxide, a major chemical used in the paint industry.
