A former Miss India and television anchor committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at her home in Mumbai, police said on July 30. Police said they were investigating why Nafisa Joseph, 25, a familiar face on Indian television, killed herself on July 29.
“Our preliminary investigations show that she committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan in her apartment,” A.R. Bodhare, a police officer, told Reuters. Joseph’s mother told television reporters the model ended her life after her wedding planned for next month was called off.

Born in Bangalore, Joseph entered the glamour world of modelling after she won the coveted Miss India crown in 1997. An animal lover and well-known video jockey, she hosted a show on MTV India, ‘Housefull,’ for nearly five years. She also anchored a television show on fashion called ‘Style’ and played herself in a cameo role in a Bollywood film.
