Wave of terror kills 15 in Jammu and Kashmir

Srinagar (IANS): Separatist guerrillas unleashed a wave of terror in Jammu and Kashmir killing 15 people and triggering fierce gun battles in this summer capital that raged until midnight on June 29.

A paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) trooper, B.R. Yadav, succumbed to his bullet wounds after fidayeen guerrillas carried out a spectacular attack in Srinagar’s city center Lal Chowk on July 29 evening.

In other incidents of violence, a woman was axed to death and five men had their throats slit. The day also saw separatist guerrillas gunning down a special police officer (SPO) as he was leaving a mosque.

On July 28, there appeared to be a spurt in terror incidents since guerrillas killed a five-year-old girl, her mother and grandmother. In another incident, a young woman, Shamima Akhtar, was axed to death in Jangloo village in Rajouri.

Guerrillas also shot dead two men at Chat village in the border district of Doda. One of the men was a special police officer and the other a surrendered militant. On July 29, cable TV operators throughout Jammu and Kashmir shut down operations following terror attacks the day before in which two of their peers were killed and another critically injured.
